O'Neil she was in her high school year at the time of the auditions, volunteered for the third season of Canadian Idol in the beginning of 2005. Her vocal performance impressed the jury, and she received a promotion to an audition in the 100th place. O'Neil was praised highly by the judges. She suffered massive losses during the Top 10 week as well as the Top 9 week of the finals. She ended up within the bottom three and then in the bottom two. The judges were shocked, and they advised that people decide for Melissa who was one of the contestants with the greatest singing abilities. O'Neil's performance was so consistent that he didn't fall in the third place. Following two stunning performances on the 7th of September 2005, as O'Neil along with Rex Goudie made it to the final two competitors, the judge Werner reported that headlines in the morning papers will read: O'Neil beat Goudie in order to be the third Canadian Idol, the first female winner, and also the youngest champion in the show's history . O'Neil's Canadian Idol win was announced by President Paul Martin immediately.
